Rental Assistance

Section 8 Program helps eligible families pay for rent. Families can choose their own housing within the housing authority’s service area and may be able to move to another area through a process called portability.

If a family qualifies and funding is available, they receive a housing voucher. Once they find a home that meets program requirements, the housing authority works with the landlord, and the family signs a lease. The program pays part of the rent directly to the landlord, and the family pays their portion. Most families pay about 30% of their monthly adjusted income toward rent.

Bring It Home Rental Assistance (BIH) is a Minnesota program that helps low-income families afford rent. The program provides financial assistance to renters whose household income is at or below 50% area median income in the Virginia HRA’s service area.

BIH is designed to support households that spend more than 30% of their monthly income toward rent. Tenants are not allowed to port their voucher outside of Virginia HRA’s service area.
